On May 8, 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio at 3pm that the war in Europe had come to an end, following Germany's surrender the day before. This day came to be known as VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day.
Many people were extremely happy that the fighting had stopped and there were big celebrations and street parties.
People also attended church services to thank God for the victory.
VE Day was also a moment of great sadness and reflection, as millions of people had lost their lives or lost loved ones in the conflict.
In his VE Day announcement, Winston Churchill said: "We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing, but let us not forget for a moment the toil and efforts that lie ahead."
Even though VE Day marked victory for Europe over Germany, it did not mark the end of World War II.
Many had to continue fighting battles in other parts of the world away from Europe where the war continued.
Many soldiers, sailors and pilots were sent to fight against Japan, who had not yet surrendered.
Still, Churchill ended his address with, “Even if it is a hard struggle we will not be the ones who will fail.”
From Churchill we learn that acknowledging difficulty and suffering takes caritas and veritas. Continuing in our efforts, and refusing to quit, shows actio.

This historical thought was delivered by our Upper Prep students at devotional on 05/08/2025. Each week one class leads the student body in prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, scripture recitation, a meditation, and an historical thought. Family and friends are welcome, Thursdays 8:30-9:05 am.
