Hastings Day Celebration

Once a year, the Belmont campus is transformed into a castle and students come to school in medieval attire for a day filled with learning and fun. October 13th was Belmont Classical Academy's all-school celebration of the Battle of Hastings, a battle that changed the fate of England, bringing an end to the Anglo-Saxon rule and beginning a new line of Norman (French) rulers.

Here is what the Bayeux Museum says about the historic event:
"On 14 October 1066, the Battle of Hastings, fought against the army of Harold Godwinson, last of the Anglo-Saxon kings, was the decisive event in the conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy. The Bayeux Tapestry, with its countless details embroidered on linen cloth, serves as a unique representation of one of the greatest battles of the Middle Ages."^1

On this, the fifth annual Hastings Day celebration, Belmont students learned about medieval etiquette, attended a feast in the great hall, participated in activities such as "fishing in the English Channel" and "storming the castle" (pictured below), and translated the Latin text on the Bayeux tapestry.

Thank you to all of the faculty and parent volunteers for making this day possible!
