Poetry and Courage

On October 22, Mrs. Gorrell's Primary school class performed the poem "Christopher Columbus" by Laurie Stevens. This poem reminds us of Columbus' courage as he faced the challenges of a long voyage and even mutiny when he and his sailors began to lose hope of finding land. We are grateful for Mrs. Gorrell, who taught and led this poem with joy and enthusiasm.
At Belmont, students memorize and recite poetry each year. Memorizing poetry helps students to build a storehouse of the good, the true, and the beautiful in their minds, a storehouse that they can draw upon throughout their lives. It helps them practice committing things to memory. We practice and perform poetry because art, in all its forms, adds meaning to our lives.
