The Inspired Mission of Christopher Columbus

God presides over the destinies of nations and raises up individuals to fulfill His plan.

The name Christopher means Christ Bearer.  Christopher Columbus was born in 1451; just one year after Johannes Gutenberg invented the moveable type printing press. By this time Bibles were becoming more available across Europe.

His ability to read the scriptures in his own language increased the power of the Holy Spirit in His life. He was then able to fulfill the mission that God had for him.

As he grew older he gained employment on a ship. His father wanted him to sell the cloth his family made at ports the ship would sail to.

The ship wrecked and everything on board went to the bottom of the sea. Christopher was hurt but he survived. In fact, he felt that the wreck was a blessing from God because he was taken to Portugal.

While in Portugal, he learned the mariner’s and cartographer’s trade.  He learned to make maps and how to be a sailor. This gave him the knowledge he needed for future voyages.

You know the story of how he discovered America, but did you know that he wrote a book containing prophecies and how he was led by God?  Here are some of his words:

“God has bestowed upon me in abundance, and has given me what was necessary from astronomy, geometry, and arithmetic and has given me adequate inventiveness in my soul, encouraging me to go forward. Without ceasing, they inflame me with great urgency.”

“It was the Lord who put into my mind the fact that it would be possible to sail from here to the Indies.  All who heard of my project rejected it with laughter, ridiculing me.  There is no question that the inspiration was from the Holy Spirit, because He comforted me with rays of marvelous inspiration from the Holy Scriptures.”

“The only thing that sustains me is my hope in Him who created everyone: His support has always been near. On one occasion not long ago, when I was deeply distressed, He raised me with His right arm saying, Oh man of little faith, arise, it is I. Do not be afraid.”

Like Christopher Columbus, we are here to do many good things, even if they are hard. The Lord will always help us.

Primary School Teacher

Following this historical thought, the Upper School presented the poem "The Bridge Builder" by Will Allen Dromgoole.

This historical thought was delivered by our Lower and Primary School students at devotional on 3/05/2026. Each week one class leads the student body in prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, scripture recitation, a meditation, and an historical thought. Belmont family and friends are welcome, Thursdays 8:30-9:05 am.

Belmont is an independent PreK-12 school in the classical, Christian tradition. In partnership with parents, we invest in students — helping them acquire an education of the highest quality, find joy in life, and become influences for good in the world.
